please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

It's a Badger pub so expect Badger beer in abundance. I chose Poachers out of a bottle rather than anything on tap....it was a very warm day after all. The garden was a creche for noisy young kids but they were harmless enough. Inside, the place was decked out like an eatery, aiming for the local wallets rather than discerning beer drinkers. Still, it was clean, quite homely and pleasant enough. Perhaps evenings are livelier in a good way. Tandridge is a pretty village without any facilities whatsoever (no buses, no shop) so a pub is a luxury that ought to be used by the locals to keep it going.

Called in here for dinner after a day out at Chartwell, Had a lovely meal and could not understand why it was so quiet.

Well worth a visit.

Sussex was on and it was very good on a unfeasibly sunny October saturday. The garden is very pleasant and service very good.... I like the Barley Mow.

Delighted my a recent visit, the two most prominent members of staff were excellent and complimented each other, the pork and red cabbage excellent as was the fish and chips . The normal selection of real ale, all good but 10 out of 10 to the staff for making a pleasant evening. Dog friendly, garden and placed well on footpaths in Godstone / Oxted border. A traditional country pub that is delivering .

Picking up on previous comment, bar food portions were fine a couple of Saturdays ago .. and the chips were lovely. Beer good as well and staff friendly. Not cheap but then one is in Surrey!

Visited on a Tuesday night. Very quiet only a couple of other diners.
Limited menu , not cheap.
Calamari starter was well cooked but miniscule, belly pork starter again well cooked but very small.
Fillet steak tasty but overcooked and absolutely tiny, Smoked salmon salad again good quality but very small portion.
All in all fairly good food, but appalling value for money. Left feeling very unsatisfied walletwise and still hungry.

Stopped in here on Sunday 8 May. Sussex, Badger, Firkin Fox, Tanglefoot was off. Large pub, food orientated but barman saw my Kingston Beer Festival t shirt and happy to talk about real ale. Decent garden out the back. Ok

Nice little pub lots of parking and the food was very good though a little overpriced. The staff were very welcoming and made us feel at home and the ale was very good. Worth a return visit.

We visited for lunch today. There were three of us.

The service was good and we had Liver & Bacon and Fillet Beef & Mushroom Pie both of which were superb.

All at a reasonable price.

We were very pleased.

i recently visted this pub with 12 friends. we booked well in advance as it was a weekday lunchtime. unfortunately there was a skeleton staff, the tables were not laid and the food overpriced and of poor quality. the parking and general layout of the pub is good

Found this little gem by chance. I was driving along M25 needed lunch just turned off and found a sign and followed it. Walked in and was met with a very friendly welcome and a great smile. Had a pint of tangle foot and wow it was spot on. A sure sign that the cellar is controlled by people who know about real ale. Had a 3 course lunch and each course was delightful, tiger prawns as a starter followed by a roast lamb main and a sticky toffee pudding to finish off.
Inside the surroundings were pleasant and inviting and all and sundry were made to feel most welcome, including a party of walkers. I intend to revisit in the evening to check out some of their live music and I also intend to stay to visit some of the fine buildings in the area.

Good parking and well situated for walking on the Greensand Way. Good parking area to the front and modest and quiet rear garden.
Ales were good but the food a bit over-priced for our group. The food that was ordered was good, however.

Played golf at Tandridge and stayed at this great little pub, the room was superb, very clean and had everything I needed. I had an evening meal there and quite honestly it was restaurant standard food, what a find. The full english in the morning was worth the visit alone, great service from a very friendly team. Well Done, I will be back

popped in to thank the landlord for a favour he had done me and ended up enjoying a nice pint of guiness and a beautifully cooked steak (even though it wasnt on the menu! - very obliging). keep up the good work at the barley cherie & john.

My first visit and already one of my favourite pubs ever.

Interior design - FANTASTIC.
Beer Garden - FANTASTIC
Country setting - FANTASTIC
Helpfulness of the young barman - FANTASTIC

Couldn't praise this pub highly enough and for that reason I am awarding a very rare 10 out of 10.

Can't believe other comments claiming it's expensive. It's on a par with most London/Kent/Surrey pubs these days.

I will definitely go back again if I'm in that area.

I stopped here as the halfway point between Godstone and well.. erm Godstone ! Twas a circular walk. The service was a tad slow, the beers were indeed Badger. now for the good points, the beer could not be better kept. A happy FOUR hours between 3pm and 7pm, Mon-Fri.During that time all beers and many other drinks are 2.20! A typical Good Pub Guide style pub. olde worlde, loads of mock tudor beams, ancient looking teak like wooden chairs. A fabulous garden, which is something of a suntrap. The barman was the best i've encountered for many a year, full of good manners and helpfulness. One very nice touch was the wonderful glasses, they had a picture of the dorset coast and proclaimed "Beers from Dorset".Well worth a visit.
slerpy - 4 Jun 2009 16:42
First the good points - looks OK from the front, and it has a very nice beer garden out back. On the downside, the beers are from Hall & Woodhouse (which I am no great fan of) and 40 minutes to produce a sandwich when only one other couple had ordered food ahead of me was quite ridiculous. Very expensive too, and it should be a lot better than it currently is.

A better place to drink under the latest incumbents but they'll have to work hard to bring back regulars who, justifyably, deserted the place in droves a couple of years back.

Friendly management and staff and a good selection of beers kept well. A bit on the pricey side, particularly the fairly indifferent wines, but a happy "hour" from 3pm to 7pm helps. Food is still nothing special though and, for what it is, outrageously priced. Don't try the cheesy chips, truly awful!

Food aside, it's now not a bad pub and, with the onset of warm weather,
has the additional attraction of a decent garden. Still room for improvement but definitely better than it was.

Beware you don't get your Barley Mows muddled up.

This is a smart country pub just off the A25. Use your tom-tom maestro.

Decent Badger beers. Well kept but maybe a little pricey. Pleasant beer garden and friendly enough service.

Although alot think that this pub has seen changes towards the worse lately, the two recent visits Ive had here have been a pleasure

This place would definately work best on a hot day though, as the wide garden and seating area helps fill up this place. Cosy inside but a little small

But the Tanglefoot and Beaver are lovely, and the service has been wonderful. A quality pub
the_original_rawnsleys - 2 Sep 2008 14:40
Much improved pub with really good food and terrific beer. Seems to be gradually building a reputation. Deserves praise just for serving food all day which is unheard of at most pubs in this neck of the woods.
smileysmile - 13 Feb 2008 00:55
Decent pub, but another one that actually went backwards with a refurb. Food is nice, but is pricey for the small portions. They've gone too much for the gastropub market and neglected what was great about it in the first place.

Beers are still decent though.

Hopefully it will work its way back to what it was a couple of years ago.
Kelvins_Ferret - 15 Jan 2008 13:35
This pub seems dogged with problems. I stopped for lunch with my mother at what appeared very pleasant surroundings. First one, then another barman couldn't help with recommendations for their beer ('can't stand bitter'), but I had a great half of Tanglefoot.

The lunch turned up after over 3/4 hour, my mother's fish pie was tepid, and my salad turned out to be an inedible plateful crammed with tinned tuna, some indescribably awful shrimps, coleslaw, potato salad, half an egg and some greens. I gave up after a couple of mouthfuls. For 9 this was an insult, compounded by the curt reply by the staff - 'that's what was on the menu'.

Never again.
sophyr - 25 Jul 2007 19:05
I think the person below me might have just eaten there on a bad day because I enjoyed my meal when I last ate there, and the Tangle Foot on draught is also very agreeable, the others aren't bad either. Added to which, they have some of the best pork scratchings in town.

Last time I went there was live Jazz playing which, as far as I know, is now happening every fortnight.
All in all, this pub is certainly worth a visit.
mr_phantom - 29 May 2007 10:26
Some significant improvements under the new tenants. Beers remain good as is the food although not particularly good value. Service is prompt and friendly. The spacious garden with new seating is a real plus in fine weather

There are some downsides. The new incumbents clearly do not subscribe to the adage "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" nor recognise that locals, especially those in small rural communities are ultra conservative. The bar has been enlarged and had a "makeover". Much of the paraphernalia which builds up over the years and gives the country pub its character has been removed and the walls painted white. What was once a cosy, if slightly worn, bar has been replaced by bright impersonal room in which you can drink. Entirely out of place is a new "space-age" cigarette machine (with a smoking ban due in July, what's that all about?) and a LINK cash machine (talk about low rent!). Sadly missed are the complementary bar snacks on Sunday lunchtimes, replaced by a garish peanut vending machine.

Overall, though, a friendly place to drink and eat albeit compromised slightly by unecessary changes which make the bar look like an urban refugee in the country. It wouldn't take much to correct what's amiss; I hope it happens.

This pub has just been refurbished. There's now lots more room inside and it still has the large garden at the back. The "Ramblers rest" bar with slabs down has also been kept. Very nice beers on: Badger best, Hoppy hare, Old speckled hen & Tanglefoot. Food good and reasonably priced. Staff were still learing how to pull a pint but I think it was their first day! A proper country pub.

The good news is that from March 2007 the pub have new owners, the food at realistic prices is ery good. The range of bager beers excellent including hoppy hare. now open all day, with food available we can expect great hings.
gainsbunny - 9 Mar 2007 19:01
I went here with my wife at 7 on a Saturday night. The bar was absolutely empty, not a good sign. The bar man (manager) was on his mobile and kept talking for a while wilst i was waiting to be served. Eventually he served me (Badgers Best good)but then proceeded to turn the music up quite loud so it interupted our conversation. We finished our drinks and left.
Any pub that is empty at 7 on a Sat night must have problems in this case I suspect the landlord is the problem.
anonymous - 22 Oct 2006 15:50
Once a good locals pub, also popular with walkers and others out for the day. Now spoiled by the latest landlord. Offhand, sometimes rude, plays his own taste in "background music" at levels that preclude conversation. Hardly ever presnt in the bar which, on reflection, is no bad thing. Highly mobile staff, which must say something about employer relations.

At one time had a lively bar, an honest, if unremarkable, restaurant serving decent pub grub and a nice garden for the summer.

The beer's still good but alienated drinkers are now voting with their feet, and wallets. Bar often virtually empty as a result.

Restaurant is a joke. A scattering of soft cushions, odd potted plants and square plates are incongruous and pretentious additions to otherwise ordinary decor. Extensive menu for "pseuds" plus ordinary fare at silly prices e.g. Super Mixed Grill for 25, Super Cheese Platter at 15. Extra charge of 5 if you want another plate and share the meal. What a P*ss Take. Can't comment on the quality but something has driven off the diners; like the bar it's often virtually empty.

Still a regular, though not as often . Looking forward to the day when the current incumbent moves on and we get a decent landlord who understands the basics of customer service in a country pub.
tandridge_tog - 19 Oct 2006 14:26
Used to be our local, still is, but the atmosphere has changed since the new landlord took over, I have heard that the food is good, but have not eaten there, wish it well, but needs to have a better attitude towards customers and not such a grumpy landlord.
anonymous - 24 Jul 2006 23:28
Go through the front door and you are confronted with a sea of tables laid up for eating. But don't give up, carry on and you find a proper country local at the back. Badger beers in good nick, and yes, a nice take on tapas as well as a poor take on punctuation.
nickdavies - 21 May 2006 19:21
We found this pub by chance, and were so surprised by such excellent food. It was of such a high standard that we thought it really was quality restaurant food. We asked to see the Chef, and the Head Chef, who is French came to speak with us. A truly terrific meal which all four of us enjoyed. The service and hospitality was also excellent, and although it is very informal it was a must for us to return. So far we have been back twice, and it is just as good as our first time!! Have recommended it to all our friends.
Mrs. A. Gibbons - 2 May 2006 19:48
The sort of place which, attractive from the exterior, when you enter becomes totally silent and all occupants turn round and stare at you. Made the mistake of booking a colleague in there for B&B a week , or so, ago.
Filthy dirty, dirty bedding which was reluctantly changed without word of apology and an absolute rip-off at 53 / night B&B. So concerned was he that he phoned me after being in there fo 10 minutes and begged me to find him alternative accomodation! In the end, he stayed but did not dare to eat breakfast! Called in at Little Chef for that.
Wish it would come on the market as a sensible owner could turn it into a wonderful hostelry.
As my old Granny used to say; "cleanliness costs nothing!". So down on your hands and knees and out with the scrubbing brush and paint can.
