Went to have lunch with some friends one weekday. Two pints of bitter and two J2O cost £13 apparently. We were then charged, sorry overcharged, for three meals and for a round of drinks twice!
This could have been a rendezvous for the four of us but I only get turned over once.
We'll find somewhere more honest next time.

...and I'm glad I did. Lovely little place

As with some of the better pubs, this is closed on Saturday afternoons. Shame, as I now have to come back all the way from Croydon to sample it.

Youngs Ordinary, Bombardier and Tribute (3.30). Best pint of Tribute I have had for ages, tasted lovely. Small snug as you walk in, bar is around the corner. Decent beer garden. Nice enough.

Have just come home from a return visit to the William IV. This time my wife and I had a wonderful Sunday lunch - 8-95 for two lovely dishes. The first was Roast Beef with roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, cabbage, carrots and cauliflower along with a large Yorkshire puddings. I was almost full after this course, but still managed to find space for the Apple and Cinamon Crumble which had been made by the landlord.

All in all I cannot fault the food or the service at this establishment. I go there looking for comfort food, and friendly service. Both of which I get in abundance.

We've always been on a Saturday night (twice). We've eaten in the restaurant and both times the 4 of us have been the only ones there! Funny restaurant, you have to go out the bar, semi outside and back in another door at the back of the pub. The food is 'ok' nothing stunning. The chef was 'hanging on' for us to order the desert at 9pm. The beer was good though!

While I cannot fault the beer - a choice of three real ales with the two I tried, Young's 'ordinary' (why do we call it that?) and Tribute both being excellent, the 'pub grub' was probably, no actually was, the worst I have ever experienced!
Having ordered a 'siloin steak' medium rare, I was presented a thin slice of pink meat, almost completely without colour and certainly not sealed, which was sent back purely on its unappetising appearance. Its replacement, almost equally unattractive in appearance, appeared with an explanation form the cook - I cannot use the word chef - that It was the best that she could do! It was awful and after trying a few pieces I wrapped it in a napkin and brought it home for my dog!
The steak was, at best, a piece of minute steak, never an 11.00 sirloin, and was just inedible having whatever little life it ever had being completely cooked out of it!
I just cannot stress how much you should avoid the food in this travesty of a food pub - just stick with the beer and eat in the Red Lion!

I hadn't darkened the doorstep of this place for almost 2 years until I happened to dive in at the end of last month, sheltering from a horrendous downpour. It was shortly before afternoon closing and so an estimation of the atmosphere couldn't really be made. But in essence not much had altered in the intervening period - except provision of a restaurant area where the pool room once was. Not being a lover of cue and ball-orientated sports, to my mind this was a worthy advance. I can't pass judgement on the food served in it; the usual hearty pub fare was on the menu which one would expect from a Young's house. It just depends on whether there is a decent cook installed - quality can and does vary in Young's pubs so I'm not altogether surprised at earlier comments.

But frankly I care less about the grub, as I always saw this as a boozer first, and happily the new owner (who must've moved in just after my last visit) have recognised this and retained it as such. I used to come here often in the late '90s and although the beer range is now restricted thanks to Young's takeover 4 years ago, it is well-kept, and can usually be quaffed in cosy and convivial surroundings. The barmaid (sister of the owner) was very chatty, despite being about to close up, and made me feel like I should come back sooner than in another 2 years.

In Bletchingley, beer is just as good at the Prince Albert; food probably better at the Red Lion. But for character, and a delightful off-the-beaten-track location, come to the William IV.

This is a great little olde english pub with a nice cosy atmosphere and a friendly greeting for all. The food is traditional pub grub - the ploughmans is the best I have ever had! Sunday lunch is great value for money at 8.95 for two courses (dinner and pud) - the portions are a good size so you wont leave feeling hungry. Nice outside area too, especially in the summer. I would definitely recommend this pub, it's worth heading off the main drag in Bletchingly to try it out.

Have always enjoyed my visits to the William IV.

The food is not top London restuarant quality, but thats not what you want from an English Country Pub. You want good, wholesome fare, and the William IV is definately a place to provide this.

The Sunday lunch is great for the price. The plate is full, and for 8.95 is extremely well priced. I've been to a number of other pubs, and have been charged more, for less.
paul743 - 14 Jan 2010 18:37
The food has always been average and some of the beer is not the best. The garden is lovely in the summer. Better places to eat in the village.
FromSurrey1 - 9 Jan 2010 21:17
A good country pub a bit of the beaten track, parking isn't great if the pub is busy. Been in the pub 3 times over the last 2 months, the food has always been good, its not Michelin stared but its good wholesome food, the atmosphere has always been good and the staff and landlord are always welcoming.
keithkc71 - 9 Jan 2010 14:04
Went to this pub recently and the food is average at best. I agree its a good "boozer" but that's about it and there is much better food to be had in the village.
surreyman - 3 Jan 2010 18:55
Went recently for some food and it was average at best and thats as far as I would go. Not disputing its a good "boozer", but looking at the other positive comments re food I disagree - There is better food to be had in the other village pubs.
surreyman - 3 Jan 2010 18:52
The summer has seen the garden turn into a real delight, and with the quality of food continuing to be great, the pub is really making an impact on the locals.
Not to be missed.

I have just wiled away a couple of hours in The King William IV, with a couple of pints of well kept Bombardier, and a pleasant chat to the guvnor, Dave. It's really nice to get a warm welcome, and feel as though your important to there business. I didn't eat ther, but the food look good, so i will try that out one day, the outside area looks good and safe for the kids. The surounding area is nice, plenty of countryside for a weekend walks, and a golf course in Bletchingley, where there is other pubs, but i think this one would be hard to beat. It's not on the main road, so sat nav or map mite be a good idea. You will not be disappointed if you like a country pub.
The1800moralist - 8 May 2009 16:17
A real country pub, small and cozy with a log burner. Very friendly owner and staff who offer some good value for money pub food. Beer is Youngs but luckily they serve Wells Bombardier along with the usual Lagers. Well worth a visit, best pub in Bletchingley.
DaveGos - 26 Jan 2009 14:31
This is a great little boozer, a rare traditional proper pub. This is my local and its great, now under new management (who is an old time local)they are trying hard to bring it back from the recent bad times. Good pub grub is served, friendly bar service and the locals are not bad either. The garden is currently being restored, and looking rather good, formal dinning room as well, Well worth a try!
nicnocs1 - 21 Jul 2008 11:01
I'm so glad I chose to take a friend here for lunch today.I had read other peoples comments and thought I'd try to find it. What a warm welcome from the new owners sister. We lunched in the garden and the food was splendid and not over priced. I noticed also on Tuesday and Wednesdays they serve pensioners lunch for 5, well worth taking some seniors for a treat. I will be back and hope others find this little gem.
sackvillemum - 10 Jul 2008 17:01
By far the best pub in Bletchingley. Thank goodness for the new owners as under the last ones it had gone downhill rapidly. Great variety of beers on tap, a good wine list and a really friendly atmosphere. It's off the beaten track a bit - down Little Common Lane - but is certainly worth the diversion off the A25. I haven't tried the food yet but it looked good on the 'plates on the next table!
stewmorr - 6 Jun 2008 16:18
This is definitely on the up and I would heartily recommend it to others.
It used to be a favourite of mine and my work colleagues - we work in nearby Nutfield and appreciate a traditional independent pub rather than a 'chain' one dishing out medicore food and beer!! However the pub went seriously downhill with the last owner - it was dirty and souless - and it was such a shame to see it in that state.
The new owners have cleaned it up, bought in new furniture and are re-landscaping the garden - finally the Willie is getting the treatment it deserves!!
Yesterday was the first time we tried out the new food menu and I must say I was very impressed. The staff were very polite, friendly and attentive and the food was prompt, hot and tasty.
I wish the new owners every success and we will definitely be back.
ciderguzzler - 29 May 2008 14:56
A gem! This is the last real pub in the village. All the rest are "theme" pubs or fancy restaurants. The new owner is a local man who means well (and I hope fares well). I re-visited "The Willie" once they re-started food, and was impressed with the genuine clientelle (regulars) not company lunch groups. This pub needs local support; so pop in and I will buy you a drink.
avidaboutpubs - 28 May 2008 16:09
This pub has recently been taken over and for the better i must say. On my first 2 visits since the change over i was greeted by the manageress with a friendly smile and a warm welcome. At this time there was no food available as they were looking for a cook. A few weeks later i saw the sign saying food was available so i thought i would give it a try.It was a Saturday night and the pub was very quiet. Unfortunally i was not greeted with the friendly smile as before. The lady serving was sitting reading the paper and i seemed to have inconveinienced her by coming in. I stood at the bar for at least 5 minutes before she even got up from her paper, she huffed as she came over and not even a hello she just said "yes". We ordered food which was very good.
Cooked by the manageress.I guess they didn't find a cook. She does a very good meal but the bar has been sacrificed for this. You need a warm friendly welcome which i didn't get. All in all a great local pub with plenty of charm just change the bar staff and get someone who really wants to do the job and enjoys it.

The Willie has now got new owners and what an improvement, as stated below it is now clean and fresh, (even the toilets have been cleaned and decorated.) Youngs beer is well keep and they have a guest beer too.
Food is now served, which is good old fashioned pub grub, good value home cooked food at reasonable prices.
Come and give the Willie a try, you be amazed how much it's improved and the locals are friendly too!!

EARLYBEER - 20 May 2008 15:00
I crept in fearing the worst...doggy doings...breastfed babies behind the bar...but LO! a veritable transformation....clean..I'll say that again...CLEAN....as it has not been for several years..the purchase by Youngs made it so bad...this was a great little pub and now has a small chance of surviving. The locals want it to..the landlord..inexperienced but optimistic does..fingers crossed he'll find a cook to knock out honest food....but I fear for its' future..fingers crossed that the big brewer black spot has not arrived, yet.
Insearchofthebestpint - 18 May 2008 22:03
A proper English pub, bittter was good and the welcome even better, keep it up!!!
anonymous - 16 Sep 2007 00:48
A real proper unspoilt little boozer with good ales. Food was well priced. We enjoyed to jovial locals who made us feel very welcome. We recomend it to you all. Can't say we noticed any dog doo. Maybe that problem has been resolved.
anonymous - 14 Aug 2007 19:08
Three words - dirty...dirty...dirty!
There was four deposits of dog shit in the garden and the toilets could do with a clean. Other than that, the Willie is a great little pub if just a little bit too cluby!
anonymous - 12 Aug 2007 21:35
We were recomended the paella and a decent pint of 'Youngs Beer'by freinds of ours, so far so good. We went to a rather tatty beer garden with doggie waste present. We nearly left then. We stayed in the bar to eat, but service was ??? Neither my wife or I could use the toilets due to smell and lack of cleaning.Food and beer was OK but cleanliness put us off forever. My sleeves were enen stained by beer puddles on the bar.
anonymous - 9 Aug 2007 00:12
Smashing pub with everything you need from a local and a warm welcome..... must be why all those that defected from the Nutfield Marsh establishment like it so much!!
anonymous - 30 Jul 2007 16:42
Well noted earlydrinker, but the second visit was with 'er indoors' if you know what I mean and she was next to me as I wrote the reveiw. i wouldn't drop myself in the you know what would I
KITCHEN - 14 Jul 2007 18:58
KITCHEN, you were there on June 1st, or shortly before. An excess of Young's is clearly affecting your memory'
earlydrinker - 9 Jul 2007 20:57
A marvelous time was had on Friday night. Our first visit back to the WILLIE in five years. From my point of veiw the beer's improved, now a Youngs house, and much can be said for the warm friendly yet laid back welcome. Sadly, we just missed the food - menu stops at 9PM Fridays when live music is on. However, the menu looked impresive for such a small pub so we'll be back next week a little earlier. Definatly recomend this pub!
KITCHEN - 9 Jul 2007 13:01
I was told that this is the main place in the village on a friday night. They were'nt far wrong. We had a great time. A very friendly little pub with good Youngs beer and reasonable wine for the missus. If your listening William IV get that BBQ fired up on Fridays and we'll be there every week!
anonymous - 27 Jun 2007 10:43
Great pub, good food, good beer, good asmosphere, live music Fridays nights, friendly staff and locals.
One compliant it's to small, so popular it gets packed. Keep up the good work, one of the best pubs I've been too.
EARLYBEER - 16 Jun 2007 16:39
It seems to me that KITCHEN's being a bit hard on them for having one night off from providing food! I can think of more than one comparable pub which is closed altogether one day a week. Running a pub's a demanding business - give them a break.
earlydrinker - 14 Jun 2007 18:30
they dont do food on a Monday night. Shame on you WILLIAM IV shame on you!
KITCHEN - 13 Jun 2007 18:02
Without doubt the best sunday lunches in surrey.
anonymous - 3 Jun 2007 12:36
Recently aquired by Youngs this local pub is going places. freindly welcome, well kept beer, even freindly locals. the menu is quite extensive for such a small pub, I counted 40 dishes on my visit. Keep it up William iv. A great pub as pubs should be. I'll be back again and again...
KITCHEN - 1 Jun 2007 12:47
Dropped in for the first time the other week, and was favourably impressed. A quiet, relaxed atmosphere; one bar seemed to be mainly occupied by locals, but the general feel was friendly and welcoming, the bar staff were efficient and cheerful, and the beer was excellent.
Unlike some people ,I'm perfectly happy to drink Bedfordshire Young's, especially when it's as well kept as this. I hope to be back for more.
earlydrinker - 13 Apr 2007 22:27
Recently taken over by Youngs. Been redecorated and tidied up, all the cosy clutter has gone but still a friendly atmosphere, and beer in good condition. Suffers the Curse of the Sunday Roast I'm afraid. That's all these is on a Sunday. If you just want a snack you're out of luck. Why these pubs can't put a bit of said roast between two slices of bread and flog it to you for a fiver (this is Surrey) I've no idea.

It's still worth seeking out though.
nickdavies - 4 Feb 2007 17:45
In last night for the first time. Friendly and pleasant with a good pint of Youngs. Will go back to eat some time soon.
gdm - 9 Nov 2006 13:16
Went last night looks a nice pub, didn't stay as they do not do meals Monday or Tuesday.
alski - 5 Jul 2006 16:15
Looks as though it is one of a small row of houses hidden away from passing traffic.
The 3 small rooms are seperated by a corridor (through which a cold breeze blew the night we were there) and although the upholstery may be new it certainly isn't modern.
The Harveys was fine but 2 of my mates had Fullers which should have realy been sent back.
lout_from_the_lane - 26 Sep 2005 13:23
The Billy is another Surrey pub you won't find by accident. Three small rooms off cental servery, the one at the back more of a restaurant. Open fires, nice atmosphere, good pub for winters evenings. Nothing much has changed here in decades. Beer fine, nice range, worth a special trip.
