Nice location but sadly a GK pub....

Nice spot but be prepared to wait if you fancy a pint. Diners are very much the priority here. Also, call me old fashioned but when did it become okay for screaming babies to be allowed into pubs?

Went here at the weekend. It was very busy and car parking was pretty limited. However, the food and rapid service were very pleasing. A place with a lot of character too.
All in all, a superlative pub experience.

Great spot on a sunny day, especially out front overlooking the water. Food quite good, but gets very busy at times, so be prepared to wait.

We love the food at the Royal Oak, good helpings of food at reasonable prices compared to other nearby pubs. A beautiful location and well worth the visit. Choose your visiting time carefully though as it gets very busy at the weekend and service can be slow!

Went on a relatively quiet Friday afternoon, had a decent pint of Hardy & Hanson's Old Trip which blended very nicely with the cheese on my well-presented ploughman's lunch. My dining partners had the sausages and mash which looked excellent, and the slow-cooked duck leg with wild rice which was passable. Nice-looking pub, overall a pleasant experience ; am concerned to read the previous posters' comments about service during busy periods, so probably best to go there outside peak times.

Personnally i would avoid this place like the plague after the disgusting manner in which me & family were treated. Unwelcoming & rude antisocial staff. We visited this place for one of my wifes 50th birthday treats. (Big mistake).
To cut a long story short, we arrived at about 17:10hrs, we, as in me, my wife, my son, my daughter, my daughters boyfriend & my 3 grandchildren, aged 5yrs, 3yrs & 20months, we ordered drinks at the bar, but were told rudely that it was the food order point and to move to the correct area. When we ordered food, we were told that the curry (for me), wasn`t available till after 6, my grandaughters meal came with chips, when we requested mash potato instead, we were told no way, although it is on other dishes on the menu. The food food arrived 60/70 minutes after ordering.
BUT, the biggest problem was when my daughter released the harness on the highchair provided, my grandaughter slid down through the footwell and got her head stuck, hence major panic, whilst my daughter took her weight, i tried to prise the tray upwards to release her head, whilst all this was going on, a member of staff by the name of MEL, told us to keep the noise down, unbelievable, no assistance, no offer of a first aider, no finding out what all the commotion was about, after releasing my grandaughter, by now badly shaken, my wife tried to locate this MEL, only to find her laughing about the incident with another member of staff. After asking for the manager, we ended up with his wife 20 minutes later. After a heated discussion the matter as far as we all are concerned is still not resolved, there was no compassion, no, is my grandaughter ok, nothing and to top it all, we had to pay the bill in full. Disgusting, Rude, Antisocial. It`s certainly a birthday, my wife will not forget.

There are fundamental problems with the Royal Oak in Langstone.

The staff can seem indifferent to customers and unmotivated. This applies especially to the landlord who tends to be rather antisocial, down in the mouth. and generally unwelcoming. Whatever happened to being greeted by a warm smile accompanied by "good evening, and what can I get you to drink sir?". The beers on sale are ordinary and the microwaved food is mediocre at best. The garden is tired and scrappy with a marvelous view of the bin store. There seems to be little or no value placed on the pub's unique history and fabric.

Great location. Great view from outside. Great potential. 9.00 for a New Year's Eve ticket? I'd rather eat a rat sandwich. Overall score 2/10.

Cosy, welcoming enough place in great location on the waterfront. Good ale selection, though dominated by Greene King beers.

Stunning location, but the food and service were a huge disappointment. I could not get a smile out of the lady who served me, she looked really miserable, I asked to change my club sandwich to a baguette, which they would not do, despite it saying on the menu you have a choice of bread or baguette, I asked for another sandwich without mayo and it came with it although they did change it without any problems, the portions were measly (not much fillings in the sandwiches). I would not go back there, next time I'm in the area I will try the ship which has the same stunning location and also has a patio area overlooking the harbour where the Royal Oak did not (you could get a table inside overlooking it, but as its right on the seafront there are only benches at the front of the pub). 10/10 for location 4/10 food and service.

such a shame a pub in such a gorgeous location has only got GK national bland ales when there are so many better ones in the local area

This pub varies on a daily basis. Recent midweek visits had great service and excellent food. A Sunday lunchtime visit was poor - average food, average service, and a grotty garden with fag packets on the ground. The staff can be welcoming and friendly, or dismissive and bored. I stick with it because over the years it has been better most of the time. As a local, much preferred in the autumn/winter when the place has more of a local clientele.

Stopped here on a Monday evening for dinner for 3 after a day's sailing. The food took ages to arrive. When it did arrive, it was pretty good, except the fried fish had obviously come straight out of the freezer. I think the otherwise friendly and helpful staff got the hint, because they knocked all the drinks off the bill. Still miles better than the Ship Inn around the corner.

Built in 1555 as 3 cottages which became a pub in 1700. Outstanding waterfront location & views make it a legend - the most painted & photographed pub in the UK. Traditional fires, low oak beams, wood & stone floors, nice beer garden, no parking. A food pub but separate eating area. Live folk music 3rd Sun. One time Pmth & Brighton United Breweries, later Brickwoods, then Whitbread. In recent times sold a good pint of Gales HSB, but now sadly a GK Managed pub renovated in 2005. Such a shame, but today we were welcomed by pleasant efficient staff and enjoyed our good value food and well kept beer.

I am yet another who has found this pub a dissappointment. We had friends to stay and thought this would be a pleasant place to take them for a pint and evening meal.Luckily their meals were about average , but after a wait of 80 minutes!! My blue steak arrived on a cold plate , and the inside was freezing. I sent it back and they had the cheek to bash it and try and bring it back to me.Only one bar maid serving as well. WE WILL AVOID THIS LIKE A PLAGUE.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the last couple of postings. We went there on a warm Saturday evening and of course it was busy. There was only 1 person serving drinks (slowly and bad beer measures) and the food wait was down as being 45-60 minutes and it took all that time and some. The starters, 1 cold pate, took over 45 mins to come, the 2 main courses arrived eventually after 1 hour 20 mins and a complaint to the landlord. The table next to us sent their cold
paella back for further cooking.
It's a great location, but we won't be back again after this, our 2nd disappointing visit, I'll visit the Ship next time.

OK food but can be a bit cold at times. Chef gets a bit up himself. Pub atmosphere nice but can be a bit stuffy staff and landlord a bit unsociable unless you are a real regular
gammybaby - 12 Aug 2007 11:01
oh dear, oh dear what has happened to this pub used to be a great pub with real charm, but now it's just like every other big brewery managed house, bland beer slow service from staff that aren't interested, i was just waiting for one of them to say do you want large fries with that. what a waste of a great location

One of the most overrated pubs I've been in. This used to be an idyllic spot with great HSB and a lovely low-beamed interior. Now it's little more than a restaurant with a bar attached.

Food is average and it is not unknown for it to be scalding on the outside and cold on the inside. Decent Gales beers are now a distant memory replaced by the monolithic Greene King selection.

It's also an idea to bring some reading material - you will need it during the long wait to be served a drink on any remotely sunny day. Most frustrating to see one or two overworked bar staff serving the drinkers while several others loiter nearby ready to service the more lucrative eaters.

It's still a nice spot (road noise notwithstanding) but the decision to let small children into the bar area was the final nail in the coffin for me. Pleasant enough for a late drink on a cold winter's night but for the rest of the time you're much better off heading to the Old House in Havant.

One of our favourite hideaways! This pub is located on the edge of the harbour of Langstone. Catch this area at low-tide (full tidal details written inside the door on a blackboard!) and you can have an beautiful walk along the harbour's beach. Passing the old mill, duck pond, seeing great views of rare birds and moored boats, this is a lovely location. The pub itself has recently been tastefully renovated. Always happy to see Staropramen on tap here, a good Czech lager. We've stopped by in the past for duck, roasts and puddings (too many to list!). We visited a folk night one evening where people of all abilities and ages were encouraged to take part - a great evening with a fabulous atmosphere. Enjoy the low ceilings and oak beams of this very traditional pub best on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Located in the ancient hamlet of Langstone, just off the Havant to Hayling Island road in what is probably the most outstanding waterfront location in the County. The choice of draught beer is very good as is the food menu. Get there by midday on a weekend if you don't want to wait for ages for your meal to be individually cooked; no TV dinners here. A huge fire is maintained throughout the colder months and dogs and children are welcomed. This one is well worth visiting, often; it is a no smoking pub too and highly recommended in all departments. Parking is a problem however but you can leave your car at the nearby Ship Inn on the main road at the bridge and walk back up the pathway (if you are discreet). The Ship Inn is pretty good too if you are a smoker.

The ale in this pub should be good, but bad cellarcraft determines an alternative fate for such fine beverages. The food was very good, but the menu has not changed since Jan 2004. A nice place to visit however and much better (less McPub) than the ship. No smoking throughout to is a bonus. (3/5)

The new seats in the front are unsuitable for a Conservation Area. Please remove or replace with seats to match existing.

Came down south for business meeting. What a lovely pub, One of the cleanest I`ve been to. You should commend cleaning staff.

Excellent Gales HSB and imaginative food with plenty of sea food. Potted crab ias excellent. Friendly hard working bar girls. Parking is non existant - park at the Ship Inn on Langstone Bridge and walk along the sea shore - 5 minutes at most. Pub has excellent view of shore but gets busy.
