user reviews of the Coach, Greenwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Very busy but service was prompt. A ram and special while sitting outside was a pleasure. Good location and a well run pub to be fair. Nothing not to like.

ok pub in the market, with outside drinking area,ok pint of Adnams Ghostship.

Adequate pub in tourist trap. Beers OK but staff seemed too busy being "hip and trendy" to give any impression of caring abut the customers.

Good Friday and I find myself in Greenwich with extended family from up North.

Being in a mixed group of ages from 9 to 75 and with a dog in tow, I suggested we go to the Coach (used to be the Coach & Horses) as on my last visit (nearly 7 years ago) the outside area in the market was pleasant and you could get food.

So we found a couple of tables in the outside area close to some overhead heaters and settled down.

I proceeded to the bar to get the drinks and was pleasantly surprised to find a choice of 5 ales on the hand pumps....I opted for a pint of Hop Stuff's Fuseiler which was a decent pale ale style beer....I think the round came to around £18.00 which included 4 alcoholic drinks and the rest being soft....not too bad for a tourist area.

Everyone wanted food and this was being served from 6pm so we enjoyed our drinks and waited patiently....food was ordered with everyone more than satisfied with their choices and the quality and service.

My sausages and mash was excellent, all food was of high pub food quality.

Another round of drinks and we left....I was unsure whether being a tourist area whether the food would just be adequate but it more than surpassed that expectation and with a good choice of ales the beer drinkers were also more than satisfied.

Good old Coach (and Horses).

Stopped in here briefly for a swift lunch en route between Station and a wedding, after reading good reviews here. Very busy doing a lot of good looking lunches, four beers on, the one I had (twice) was perfectly served and delicious, and we were both served a nice lunch quickly. Quite pricey but nice, my pint was £3.70. The staff were slightly offish but efficient and polite which is fine by me, more than a little gastro but a good example of it's kind.

Visited on a Friday evening, and whilst the location is good, this was by far, the worst pub on our visit to Greenwich.
The pub is situated on the market, area, it's clean and offers a decent choice of real ale, albeit all from the Marstons range (Hobgoblin/EPA etc).
The pub was however badly let down by the bar staff who were clearly uninterested to the point of rudeness. When a customer orders a malt whiskey, and politely asks for ice, even when it's the end of the night and all the ice has been used/thrown away, the request should not be met by ignorance.
When water is requested as an alternative, it should be supplied, whilst here the bar staff wanted to take my whiskey behind the bar and do this themselves - surely, manners should be a basic requisite - If you have to miss a pub on a crawl around Greenwich, then miss this one, they clearly do not care !!

Decent pub. Bloke behind bar very friendly. Benches outside so you could drink your pint whilst eating snake head soup or similar from the market.
bigaerials - 24 Feb 2013 18:06
Marston's EPA tasting good.
beangreen - 14 Oct 2012 14:42
Situated right in Greenwich market this is a small pub with plenty of outside seating available.

Had a excellent pint of real ale (served without my asking in a jug with a handle) sadly can't remember what it was! was a bit pricey at 3.70 though.

Staff are very pleasant and keen.

Some "interesting" customers who are a bit loud but are harmless.

The Coach and Horses - an interesting location, right inside the Greenwich Market. Get drink here and food at the market. Seating available outside in the market area. Worth popping to if in Greenwich.
dpaajones - 1 May 2011 13:42
Lovely boozer with a fine selection of beers, food, papers and Ryan Adams on the hifi. I guess it could get busy but on NYD it was comfortable...........

Nil points to the twat who wanted a table and 7 seats to himself as he struggled over some mega crossword.

As someone local to the Greenwich area, I used to frequent this pub occasionally after spending time perusing around the local market. For me, it never used to have the 'wow' factor; and besides, the Greenwich Union was always my preferred port of call.

However, I now have had a sudden and dramatic change of heart!

Yesterday late afternoon, I popped in for a swift pint. However I stayed much longer than was originally anticipated. The choice of cask ales on tap was okay. There were a few Sharp's beers on tap. Those with a liking for continental beers/lagers will certainly not be disappointed. However the highlight for me was the food on offer. I spoke at length to an amiable chap called Steve (Head Chef) he went at great length to explain that he sources much of the food from old breed cattle/stock. Steve seemed genuine and enthusiaistic in his approach towards drinking and dining.

The hearty, wholesome and tantalising British fayre on offer was of a high restaurant standard. I washed my ox and kidney pie down with a welcoming pint of stout. Food of this standard within a pub is extremely rare. The only other pubs I rate selling similar food and drink within the South London area are the Royal Oak and anchor (both of which are in Southwark).

Aside from being friendly and helpful, the staff I spoke to had plenty of outgoing charm, intelligence and insightful banter; which is shamefully lacking in many pubs nowadays.

With unequivocal doubt, this is now my new home from home!

Very good pub with a great range of drinks. Awesome staff too! Very friendly and a great help when you don't know what to drink.
the.red.head - 15 Jul 2010 00:52
Prime location on Greenwich market..... its alright and tries to be beautiful but it can be a bit sterile. Good range of beers it has to be said but it could do with fancying itself a bit less.

But we've all stared at ourselves in puddles at some stage haven't we. (coughs) That's where Berni's inn's went wrong.
terenced - 14 May 2010 10:20
In the market itself. Bare wood and leather sofas. There's a modern stripped out look with clear glass windows looking out onto the market.

5 casks - IPA, Adnams, Sharps Own and Coaster, Adnams Kolsch.

There is a beer menu which says they do Slaters beers and Estaminet Pilsner (which I must go back for as I've never had it, and it's a rare find!)

Food is around 10.

It's an OK place. Just squeezes in above average.

fit staff and good times

book man is a bit of a wally mind

peace and beers

jdeath - 1 Jun 2009 13:01
Unfortunatly, being Greenwich Market, this was full of tourists and "beautiful people" on a recent Saturday evening visit. The Adnams and Belgian beers however were in fine form and very drinkable; just a shame there was nowhere to sit, so the visit was brief,
flashharry1965 - 27 May 2009 11:32
My wife and I have developed a habit of meeting up here after work on a Friday evening and it's become our favourite local pub. The staff are always friendly and, despite its location, it never seems to get too busy.

We're moving away from Greenwich in a few weeks and both of us will definitely miss our visits to the Coach & Horses.

At the time of writing, a (very tasty) pint of Oranjeboom is 3.10 and a soft drink is 1.50.
brutalpootle - 20 Mar 2009 21:54
eco-unfriendly patio bit is very welcome especially in the recent cold spell. Food is expensive as is the beer but you'd be hard put to find a nicer pub round here. Be on the outside and observe the world and if you are lucky the RSM students may sing for you.
secretdrinker - 1 Mar 2009 12:24
Favourite pub in Greenwich. Manages to avoid having too many tourists and trendies in it, unlike the Moth, despite being bang in the market. Beer is good, food a bit overpriced for what it is, but then again you are in the middle of Greenwich.
lollygagger - 18 Feb 2009 13:29
Another Greenwich INC takeover, they dont seem to have wreaked The Coach and Horses as much as other pubs in the area. (The Cricketers for example) but the leather sofas, flowers on every table and modern fire place dont sit that well to me.
Beer was quite good, but as I dont remember what was on now, cant have been anything special.
Large, heated outside area, under the market roof, which is good for our smoking friends.

mrse1 - 20 Mar 2008 19:45
The coach has been under new ownership for a few months and as a regular feared it would be gutted. However it hasn't, the prices are still similar the staff are the same, and myself and the other locals are still welcome. I think there has been a lot of scare mongering about the prospect of INC taking over the coach which hasn't materilised. It annoys me when people make assumptions and instantly dismis changes. I think anyone who knows the pub will see that it still has the same offerings.
anonymous - 28 Nov 2006 17:27
A very pleasant pub - one of my favourites in Greenwich. Now taken over by Greenwich Inc so expect to see the bar staff changed, prices go up and atmosphere and service go down. Interestingly,I have it on good authority that it is a policy of Greenwich Inc to discourage 'locals' - always a great policy for a small town like Greenwich!
anonymous - 7 Nov 2006 11:02
Nice pub, good location. Not going to win any awards and I daren't say that people will spend the night there. Outside seating is a good idea, but you do have to suffer the constant stream of halfwits on their way to the Hardy.
easyskip - 23 Sep 2006 17:27
Oh god!!!!! yet another pub stuffed up by 'greenwich inc'! when will they stop ? you are destroying greenwich!
anonymous - 7 Sep 2006 20:29
Not a lot of differences between this place and the Admiral Hardy. I found the staff to be quite pleasant and beers well kept.
mrfalafel - 14 Aug 2006 19:55
Over-priced and not a nice crowd. This pub is more for older people, who don't want the studenty, and equally pretentious atmosphere of the Admiral Hardy.
ST2004 - 27 Jul 2006 12:24
This is one of two pubs in Greenwich market, the other being the Admiral Hardy. Neither are particularly pleasant places to have a drink while in Greenwich-especially in summer. The outside seating area is dark and dingey and the bar staff, when I was last in there, had a shocking attitude problem. I agree with the earlier comment that this place is trying too hard to be something it's not and comes off just being pretentious. Food is quite nice I suppose but is extremely pricey for what it is.
anonymous - 25 Apr 2006 00:38
Good food, good location, good beers. Kicks the Admiral Hardy into touch on the "best pub in the market" stakes.
anonymous - 28 Mar 2006 12:16
A pleasant pub in the Greenwich market. Not much space inside but plenty of seating outside. The main drawback is the noise if you happen to be there when they are taking tha maret stalls down
anonymous - 18 Nov 2005 14:46
Pleasant enough boozer, perfectly passable ales, and always manages the trick of feeling lively without being too crowded. On the rare occasions I venture south of the river for a beer I nearly always pass through this place.
tim_eyles - 4 Nov 2005 17:16
Great pub. Normally go in there after several hours of shopping. Great if you can get the leather sofa :) Barmaids are nice. After spending loads on cds etc in the market, i'm not really bothered about how much a pint costs.
RobLawford - 16 Aug 2005 20:20
This pub is great after walking round the market on a Sunday afternoon. They serve great roasts. Prices are really good too considering it is in the heart of Greenwich. Went in here on a Saturday night after all other local pubs were packed (Hardy, Gypsy Moth, Musee) and it was nice and quiet - not too quiet but not full of Eltham geezers/chavs. Nice and relaxed. Really like the decor too! Unlike that place round the corner Lawrence Louellen designed - eeek! I agree with the previous post (Tina I think) - Northern guy behind the bar is TOO buff! Main reason I go in there. So attractive. Do they serve Grolsch though? That's the question! I'll let you know! CB x
grolsch_gal83 - 25 Jul 2005 12:51
Used to love this pub when I lived in the area. One general comment (about most pub's in Egnland really) is that the day after returning from France, where I ate a fantastic 5 course meal with 1/4 litre of wine for 8, I came here and had a lamb burger for 7.50 plus nigh on 3 for a pint. Still, you live in London, you pay the price!
Ciarn - 26 Aug 2004 17:03
I quite enjoyed my night at The Coach... thought it was splendid! The Northern guy had a great arse... Mmmm.
Tina - 23 Aug 2004 22:04
i visited this pub for the first time 2 weeks ago cracking little pub, great feel.
staff were very helpful even though they were busy, very impressed.nice customers.cool music, it was kind of jazzy house, very plesent and up lifting.great selection of beers,4 ales 1 guest,.. youngs(my choice for the night)9/10 for the ale.wil be going to this pub again well done guys
Mr bohannon - 15 Aug 2004 20:26
fab food, fab friendly staff, a bit more pricey than 'the local' but worth it
james dickmann - 22 Jul 2004 23:33
Nice little pub inthe heart of the market...
Good for: Going on dates
Not so good for: A night out with the girls
Nadia - 7 Jul 2004 00:07
Poppd in for a couple, comfy leather sofa, well groomed olds were enjoying the grub and there's an open fire. Had a couple of glasses of a wheat beer which was kinda tasty - a pleasent stop off. Almost too clean to be a pub.
MrScott - 24 Feb 2004 09:50
Fantastic food - pricey yeah, but good for a treat; its all rich and fresh and local. Small so can be hard to get a seat although the outside bit is always open so there's benches - they have heaters on in winter etc etc. Basically nice but expensive. A typical postgrads' pub
Helen - 9 Jan 2004 19:33
Went in there on a Saturday night trying to avoid the mayhem of Greenwich & to my surprise it was really nice & cozy, with a real fire. Homely feeling.
Natalie - 29 Nov 2003 22:54
Situated on one of the corners in the heart of Greenwich's under cover market this boozer benefits from it's charming location. Anywhere else the this pub would be nothing but average.
Good for: Watching the world go by.
thenationofjames - 28 Nov 2003 16:00
Decent local, friendly staff; crucially, they know how to pour a pint of Guinness and make G&Ts properly.
Seb - 21 Oct 2003 16:38
nice scallops a bit pricy for pub food but worth the splurg on occasion. the lamb burger is yummy too and doesn't break the bank. if you are lucky enough to go on a weekday you will find that it is rather romantic and quiet!!
georgia - 22 Aug 2003 14:16
tries too hard to be lah-di-dah, looks like it's been plucked out of a posh bit of Islington and plonked in Greenwich market.
Darryl - 20 Jun 2003 23:30
very cosy, good atmoshphere on w wednesday evening.
salma - 22 May 2003 15:10
Smallish pub in the market. Does good (if a little expensive) food and has a friendly atmosphere.
