A nice pub, a nice pint. Sadly only the one pint as neanderthal football chanting drove us out. Some sort of local derby game I believe.

Nice, friendly place with decent ales. Home made corned beef pie was tasty.

Always a pleasant welcome here, well kept beers on 3 or 4 pumps. Usually the same selection. I understand that the management is changing and perhaps the new team might try to vary the selection. That said, beer is always well kept.

Good location, this cosy little pub is tucked away in a pleasent side street, a stones throw away from the old victorian Prison. The bar is tiny and has an oldey worldey feel. This is a locals pub and the ones drinking there yesterday afternoon were friendly. The range of beers was a bit disappointing but the pint of Black Sheep I drank was decent enough. I would have tried the Castle Eden but could only stay for one. A good tradtional pub with character, a world away from the mono culture shop and pubs that are destroying our towns and Cities, definately worth a try if you are visiting this beautiful City.

Good traditional boozer, very quiet lunchtime.

Golden Pippin very good quality.

Popped in one recent wet lunchtime, so quiet. Staff and customers friendly. OK choice of beers - I had Copper Dragon Golden Pippin at 3.20 which was pretty good. Didn't have food but it looked OK. Apparently gets hot - there was a fan behind the bar even though it was a coolish day.

So overall a pretty good pub. Probbaly the best I went in Durham which I found rather disappointing for pubs.

Wandered in early of a Sunday evening, loved the sliding door entrance. The rear bar was heaving with a very jolly party. The bar we were in was cosy with friendly locals. The beer range was not inspiring, but guided by said loacals had an acceptable pint of Castle Eden which was very reasonably priced.

Hits the heights of 'alright'. Couple of real ales on, cider is Strongbow only. Gets hot inside (sweating hot), and often is rammed due to being just round the corner from the registrary office.

Nice old-fashioned place, very clean and tidy with range of ales in good condition. Friendly barmaid (landlady?) who is interested in her customers, even if they are unfamiliar. She seems to run a tight ship - I'm surprised that it can be full of "iffy" people both from my own experience and the news I overheard in another city pub that "so-and-so" had been barred from the Dub Cow. Well worth a visit.

Excellent pub, traditional and good beers. Attracts a range of people and has a good whiskey selection too. Top stuff.
Robdurbar - 13 Jul 2010 16:52
Full of some of the most objectionable people in Durham .... at least it keeps them in one place without polluting other pubs. However, the beer is rather good which goes some way towards making up for it.

A bit like the Tardis, this pub has much inside which is concealed from the front and is bigger inside than you think. A good drinkers' pub with excellent beer. I tried the Castle Eden, and a fine pint it was too - so much so I had a couple more.

Definitely for inclusion on any Durham City crawl and a pub to which I will happily return.

Nice enough pub, very historic, friendly staff, and reasonable beer. Not too packed on a Saturday evening, which was a relief.

Decent looking pub with a snug at the front and a larger bar area at the rear.
Three beers on tap plus Strongbow & Woodpecker cider and 24 whiskies chalked up on a board.
There were a couple of old guys out the back just sat in the corner and playing on a banjo and fiddle which created a nice atmosphere. From the few pubs I've sampled in Durham, this seems to be one of the best.

Tiny frontage onto the genteel street of Old Elvet concealing a pub that stretches well back (the saloon at least; the bar is tiny). Now in the hands of Enterprise Inns despite the Newcastle breweries livery near the front bar window; this is one of the many Enterprise pubs that head office seem to leave alone, and not feel the need to refit obsessively every few years, and is all the better for it. It also happens to be the closest pub to the Racecourse sports fields and the stretch of river where the Durham Regatta takes place.
Beers are castle Eden, Cumberland (Jennings) and one other. Food is basically pies, crisps or nuts, as this is still firmly a drinkers' pub - no bad thing, just don't expect the opportunity to knock back a bowl of linguine with a cheeky pinot grigio.
pablos13 - 12 Jun 2009 15:45
address has been bugging me for ages, should be 37 old elvet,,

ps 2nd best pub in north east england, after the colpitts

Enjoyed a top-notch pint of Castle Eden Ale here last Sunday. Good, traditional boozer.
wobblybob - 5 Feb 2009 14:45
Definitely worth a visit if you are in Durham. My pint of Cumberland was excellent on a recent visit - but it is the Castle Eden for which the pub is justly famous.

Lovely, quieter road, and a building that stands out from the red-brick others on the street.
On entering there's a sliding door into 'the snug' bar - warning!! frequented by locals. There's 50 ole men, crammed into a tiny space, no ladies, so if you're not a canny lad or lass from roond 'ere like, leave immediately and go to the other saloon bar out back.

It's a pub that clearly looks after it's locals, and the off beer (Cumberland) served in the saloon bar is testament to that. What's the betting that the bar staff would be lynched if they tried that trick in the snug!. They were of course, kind enough to change the vinegar i was originally served, but i'm fed up with hearing young girls serving behind the bar using the excuse "..well i don't drink it, so I wouldn't know of it's off.." it ain't rocket science luv, if it smells of vinegar and there's a pickled egg in it, IT'S OFF ! And start to take some pride and interest in your work too - ask the manager to train you on the proper taste for the drinks you serve.

Look out for the cricket picture by A.Chevallier Taylor 1907 looks like one in the White Hart, Canterbury.. someone from kent, please confirm.

Overall nice enough, but as a tourist, you will always play second fiddle to the locals - a sign that perhaps they don't really want you there. The locals were the most unwelcoming of any bar visited in Durham - and yet and article in the Independent Newspaper displayed on the wall suggests otherwise. Maybe it was a bad night to go there.

There was an unusual man at the bar snorting up phlegm all evening - not sure if he's a regular - look out for him as well as the cricket picture.

My fav pub is Durham. Spent many a happy day attempting the 'Dun Cow Challenge' in my tax-dodging days many years ago. Great little pub in a quiet part of town. Always pop in for a couple when visting Durham. A top bar!

Fine traditional pub in a quiet smartish Georgian part of Durham, situated next door to Durham Masonic Lodge. The tudor exterior of the pub is quite a contrast to the exterior frontage of the Lodge, which resembles a church.

The pub consists of a small snug bar at the front, which seems to be where the regulars congregate, and a larger, but quieter lounge at the rear, accessed through a covered corridor, whose walls detail how the pub got its name.

My pint of Castle Eden Ale - 2.40p - was quite tasty. I forgot to note down the other beers on, but I suspect it was Black Sheep and / or Jennings Cumberland.

In summary, worth seeking out

Enjoyed my Castle Eden Ale while having a wander round this charming pub. The bar was busy, but it was quiet in the lounge.
gillhalfpint - 30 Apr 2008 21:32
Atmospheric pub, but the Castle Eden was average on my visit
oftenscore6 - 2 Mar 2008 22:57
Ancient cosy pub in an attractive street a short walk from the city centre. Not as many ales to choose from as some other Durham pubs, but served in better condition than most I visited.
Rich66 - 20 Aug 2007 00:09
Excellent Pub, lovely Beer, charming staff.

Folk Musicians meet here on a Thursday evening, well worth a visit if you like that sort of thing, steer clear if you want peace and quiet.
Barbeera - 20 Jun 2007 16:35
Whilst the Colpitts may be my favourite pub in the city, the Dunny is mother ship Fairport. It has shed the days of being Durham's officially designated children's pub and last stop before parties at the Cricket/Rugby/Rowing Club, to become the warmest and friendliest pub in Durham. The bad news is that Geoff and Sharon have left. The brilliantly good news is that Michael has returned for a second spell as landlord!

Excellent pint of Castle Eden. Not surprising that it has the highest CE sales in the country. Completing the drinking experience is the superb front bar. The expression "Little Gem" was coined for such as this.

Nice little pub with a long walk to the toilets.

A perfect pint of Castle Eden. Quiet on a Wednesday mid-afternoon. Friendly people on both sides of the bar. Sunshine streaming through the tiny snug window. Entertainment provided by the resident dog.
Only a short visit for me but it is easy to see that this is a very good pub.

I'd agree with what alister has said, and would recommend the snug on a cold winter evening(of which there are quite a few in Durham!)

Famous old-fashioned boozer.
Uncle_Dunkel - 26 Feb 2006 20:58
Possibly the idea of my perfect pub. I love this place, the beer is reasonably priced and the staff are very friendly. The inclusion of an 'itbox' in the corner doesn't spoil the atmosphere either. The only thing I dislike is the alarming number of students who go for the kudos...
markre - 2 Nov 2005 22:46
Excellent little pub well worth a visit. The beer is spot on, the snacks are good value and the staff are vwery friendly

A really great, welcoming pub. One of my regular haunts while back in Durham, this is a really nice little place, split into from snug and back bar, connected by a corridor. There is a brilliant range of beers on, usually atleast 2-3 handpulled, and all the staff have always been very friendly. Worth hunting down if you are visiting durham, even though it is a short walk from the centre.
alistair_cross - 7 Jun 2005 14:24
try the dun cow challenge.

c_j_wynn - 3 Mar 2005 12:10
Nice little pub spoiled by some of the clientel that think they own the place, a typical problem with smaller pubs.
Mad_hatter - 1 Feb 2005 11:02
I absolutley love this old pub along old elvet. I have been visiting it for years now. It's friendly, cozy, quaint etc.. but most of all the beer is kept well and you can enjoy lively conversation without having to shout. The Dun Cow is superb!
alister - 30 Jan 2005 11:42
Fantastic pub this one. Maybe a bit small but the staff are really friendly and they have a great quiz night every monday (9pm). Well worth a visit!
