user reviews of the Old Pack Horse, Chiswick

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Beer was in good condition (ESB) but felt that the whole plac was geared more towards trendy young people meeting rathe than being a basic pub.

A couple of real ales and plenty lagers plus one cider.

Jobsworth staff who you can see would rather not be there.

Trying to be a Wetherspoons but cannot reach that high in any manner shape or form.

Expensive so not a place for a session, if you can find a decent beer to drink.

Another good pub ruined, ghastly out-side lighting although they haven't buggered the inside up too much they seem to have stripped out the character completely, only two bar stools in the whole pub, discouraging hanging around the bar. Sofas and low tables, all sorts of designer knick-knacks (chandelier in birdcage!) Barstaff seem more keen on re-arrranging furniture than selling beer, tragedy. No longer a pub, contempory meeting place for young people, sigh!

This pub was closed on Sunday 18th Nov when my mate & I tried to visit! It's being re-furbished, but I can't recall when the workmen said it would be open again.
The Old PackHorse is a good pub all round, in my opinion.

After being ignored by the bar staff for the best part of 15 minutes, in a bar that was virtually empty, my friend & I decided to go elsewhere. If you are employed to work behind the bar then serving customers is part of the job remit - NOT talking to each other or your best friends who are propping up the bar!!!

seriously poor service in here, bar staff had no idea what they were doing, usual Fullers range, usual Fullers service though not as bad my nearest the Anglers for mismanagement.

A lovely homey, welcoming pub, which starts with the outside dispaying beautiful flowers in bloom. The pub has a very cosy feeling despite its size, with candles and nice little touches all around the pub.

Last Thurs an excellent jazz band who even had bagpipes which amazingly sounded great in their set (how they managed this I have no idea!!!) friendly staff, great amosphere and I have not been let down with the 2 jazz nights i have been to, nor the quiz night. The thai restaurant lovely and reasonably priced too. Great night out.

Largely unspoilt corner Fuller's house with three distinct rooms/sections. Unusually for a Fullers house they had a non-affiliated guest beer in the guise of Butcombe Bitter, which was a nice pint on this occassion.

Fantastic pub, let down by Landlord who likes the sound of his own voice..Do not go near this on a Thursday as Quiz Night should be renamed Northern Git Shouting like a Moron night! Shame he means well, and worst of all he LOVES trying to be an unfunny Peter Kay.
I still love the pub.

This OK. I like the Thai food too.

Forgot to write a review when visiting here. I can tell you it was about a month or so ago because it rained - and I don't think we've had a drop since (I'm not complaining mind).

Two things noticed here. Quirky, which wasn't a bad thing and Welcoming, this despite being a corner pub on Chiswick High Road and the nearest pub to Chiswick Park station. Lots of atmosphere and the tellies on showing sport, good range of Fullers and Gales beers and a friendly barmaid.

The Quirky side was all the upcoming events and beers served being displayed on slates hung up by pegs on a clothes line above the bar, something which is unique as far as I can remember.

Recommended and will return.

I thought this was a very good pub - nice interior, friendly and efficient bar staff, a lovely pint of Chiswick (only 2.90 too) and a choice of footie with commentary or footie with music. A real discovery, and much the best pub I tried in the area.

Didn't particularly enjoy my visit here last night, during the England game. The place was packed with people watching the match. Getting served was difficult with people crowded around the bar. In trying to get to the bar, I was also asked to move as somebody couldn't see the screen! London Pride, Discovery and Chiswick were the beers. Unfortunately I couldn't get to see much of the interior due to the crowds. A barbecue was being held at the back. A bouncer stood by one door. Not very good first impressions.

Large imposing Fullers pub occupying a prominent street corner position on Chiswick High Road. The splendid Edwardian tiled frontage is complemented internally by some fine woodwork and glasswork, although what was evidently a partitioned pub ( note the "saloon", "private" and "public" etched glass ) has now been opened up to create a number of adjoining, but distinct areas. Note also the higher up leaded windows with the pack horse motif and the fine fireplaced alcove in the old saloon bar. These surviving features earn the pub a place in CAMRA's Regional Inventory.

The interior is decorated with old theatre memorabilia including posters from theatres up and down the land and, most notably, at the end of the bar, an old large sign from the now gone Empire Theatre in Chiswick. A picture of Tommy Cooper behind the bar reflects the fact that this used to be his local. Next to it is a picture of Captain Mainwaring ( hmmm ...?).

Pictures in the room leading to the Thai Restaurant at the rear tells us that the original pub on this site dated back to 1849 and was replaced by the current building in 1910.

The Old Pack Horse would appear to be the pub of choice of the local pub goers, which is never a bad sign, and my Saturday lunchtime visit found a few friendly regulars in situ being obviously well known to, and addressed by name by, the enthusiastic bar staff. Notably, despite the Arctic conditions outside - and it wasn't desperately warm inside either - the bar staff were cherfully going about their business in those corporate black short-sleeved shirts that Fullers seem to like.

The full range of Fullers beers ( including Chiswick ) were on and both the London Pride and the Gales-branded Seafarers Ale were in fine form, as befits a pub proudly displaying Cask Marque accreditation and with a listing in the 2010 CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

This pub is easily the best all round pub experience in the immediate area and you should call in if you get the chance.

Love this pub! Having lived in the area for a year or so, it is a great venue to go for a quiet pint when wanting to get away from the more 'trendy' and crowded bars/pubs. Very cosy, and the staff are friendly enough.
As random as it is, the thai rest. in the back is great - and the head waiter guy has the most contagious smile ever.
Caz3000 - 31 Dec 2009 12:24
More of a traditional boozer than others in the area - but with a Thai restaurant at the back. Has standard Fullers beers (Discovery, Pride, ESB and Gales Winter Brew) on offer, mostly at 3.20 at pint. (Discovery was 3.10). It has three distinct bar areas and some interesting old theatre prints on the walls of one of the bars. All the beers were fine and the pub was generally clean and tidy.
Roodeye - 10 Nov 2009 10:36
Nice looking Fullers pub, with plenty of original features in the three bar areas (one of which is part of the restaurant section). Pleasant little beer garden out back. Friendly atmosphere too, and the only downside was a slightly disappointing pint of Discovery (probably just unlucky).
rpadam - 8 Sep 2009 18:35
Good location for Chiswick Park. Enjoyed a couple of pints of Pride and a pint of ESB. Usual Fullers quality. Would visit again
twineyboy - 18 Mar 2009 20:27
Great Pint Friendly Service. Well placed for my pals and I....

Best pint of Pride for a while.
bedfont - 10 Jan 2009 18:08
One more Fullers house in the heart of Fullers country. Unfortunately no Chiswick on, but the Pride was good. I was in the Sutton Arms recently and the guvnor told me that you couldnt but a pint of Chiswick on Chiswick High Rd looks like he is probably right.

Food is mainly Thai and seemed reasonably priced but they did have an English Menu including Chicken Cajun; Chicken Kiev, as well as Irish and Mexican coffee. The music was a bit too loud for my liking, but thats just my opinion.

All things considered I think that this is a pretty decent pub retaining numerous original features, including an extremely attractive fireplace in a separate alcove. Quite happy to visit here again.
RexRattus - 5 Nov 2008 10:51
Place is "managed" by a man who appears not to appreciate the difference between customer service and his own ego. I imagine Fullers will be looking into this. Clearly the beer is good. Fullers don't do bad beer, but this establishment needs a staff refresh asap. Check out the red haired lass. She's a first class nutter in my own opinion.

Rudi1966 - 20 Aug 2008 22:33
The relaxed atmosphere, friendly governor and the perfect sound level of the music made my short stay in here very pleasant.
The lounge like area with the fire blazing was an excellent touch. It was 3 quid a pint which seems pretty average for this area.
If Im around this area again I will definitely try for a longer stay.

Strongers - 24 Apr 2008 16:26
Excellent pub - beautifully kept Edwardian decor with real fire. Authentic feel - everything's brown - but that's how it was in the old days! Good beer and friendly bar staff as well.
discerningdan - 21 Jan 2008 21:52
Good beer all round, and a fine building. Well worth a visit...
meurglys_iv - 3 Dec 2007 15:51
Very well kept ale and the Thai food excellent too. I particularly like sitting in the saloon (on the Acton Lane side) which retains its fittings from when the opub went up in 1910 - a delightful place for a drink.
g.brandwood - 4 May 2007 09:12
ESB well kept -- which is half the battle. Decor an acceptable compromise between modern refurb and trad boozer. Lighting a bit on the dim side. However, best asset is the Thai restaurant within -- good grub and cheery staff. You need to walk a long way up the road towards Hammersmith to improve on this.
Mr_Shh_Shh - 2 Mar 2007 11:15
Visited this pub for lunch yesterday - thai meal was really good and pretty good value for money - and ended up staying for a few more hours (not to mention pints). I think this is the only pub I've been to where the pride was actually drinkable......

I'll defintely be back for another pint or two sometime soon.

brodie_bruce - 16 Oct 2006 17:04
comfy pub & thai resteraunt at back fantastic!
millym - 8 Sep 2006 12:22
Great looking pub, inside and out. Thai food pretty good although it can get complicated transferring bills from the bar. The Fullers beer is superb - you can almost see the brewery from the pub! Barmaid a bit crap but she hasn't spoiled the last 3-4 visits...come to think of it is there only 1 barmaid
martybeer - 29 Jun 2006 16:07
A pub where the refurb actually made it better (this must be a first!!). Nice pub, good beer and the resturant looks get (though I have yet to actually eat there). Only negative is that the bar staff do need to be more aware about who is waiting to be served.
skandal - 24 May 2006 20:30
Lovely pub, recently done out. Thai restaurant is fantastic. Excellent food, and service to match everytime I've been (and I've been here loads of times).
Bar area is lovely too, but as already mentioned, there seems to be an old fella' on every table. Bar service is sometimes out of turn, and there is a modest amount of outside drinking situated on the High Road. Perfect for when the sun is out.
Graam - 10 Apr 2006 19:49
The sensitively done redecoration of this pub has only made things better. A good mix of normal people, very well kept Fuller's beers, surroundings with character and the very good Thai restaurant at the back makes this place well worth a visit. A good, unpretentious proper pub.
LovePubs - 31 Mar 2006 10:56
Great friendly pub. The thai resturant at the back is qite nice. The decor makes you feel like you are in a jungle
PurpleRocker - 14 Mar 2006 22:33
A great boozer, full of old bar flys, talking about the old days. Lovely interior, dark mahogony and mirrors. Used to go in around 5ish a good mix of people.
bryan - 7 Mar 2006 16:44
Lovely pub. Excellent Fullers beers and so comfortable and lovely on a cold day. A real proper pub.
Alexh1982 - 12 Jan 2006 14:39
What a change! Good beers, cosy place, especially when the fires are going, prompt service and friendly staff, plus a thai restaurant. Speedy delivery of food and at a good price for the lunch crowd. Have found myself frequenting here more and more....
Flawed - 1 Dec 2005 16:08
comfy pub with excellent thai resteraunt at back.yes i know its all been done before but the food is GOOD!!!

millym - 14 Nov 2005 09:44
Not a bad refurbishment by Fullers standards - still feels like a proper pub and still worth visiting.
JohnBonser - 11 Oct 2005 17:01
Currently closed for refurbishment - re opening at midday on 5 October. Let's hope it hasn'tbeen vandalised as it was a classic pre closure
JohnBonser - 3 Oct 2005 16:47
Lovely building. Another good Fullers/Thai combo pub which I visited once and felt welcomed and relaxed straight away.
Fullerspubcollector - 29 Aug 2005 19:19
Splendid pub - London Pride in good form as ever. Best pub on this stretch of the High Road
JohnBonser - 27 Jun 2005 13:25
Great Fullers. Delightful staff, good food, nice atmosphere and a short stagger from the tube. Damn near perfect.
realalesnob - 10 Jun 2005 14:49
This was always a great pub. Used to work at Honda in Chiswick in the eighties and we used to gallop down to the Packhorse for a Saturday lunchtime drink before they closed at 3.00pm. Those the were the sad early closing days.

Tommy Cooper, the comedian, was there sometimes and he was always game for a laugh and a chat. He drank half a Pride but never offered a round. He was quite happy to accept a drink. We were delighted to be entertained by the great man and he was just as funny in real life.

There was a tough Irish barmaid there called Nuala with flaming red cheeks who told me Dont you know when you have enough when I asked for a pint of ESB after last orders. Happy days but watch that ESB.
Watcher - 2 Feb 2005 12:41
I've only been in this pub the once but I now work in the area so I will definitely be going back. It's a nice friendly place with a good range of beers.

The Thai restaurant at the back is very spacious (but you'll end up waiting a while on Friday lunchtime). The food is excellent and very well priced.
alistaird55 - 18 Jan 2005 12:34
Good down-to-earth Fullers pub. Liked it better before they turned a large part of it into a Thai restaurant, but I have eaten there and it was very good.
Its still a pub with a lot of character. Its best on sunny summer evenings (when it gets pretty full early evening after work, but usually quietens off later) or on winter nights when you can sit by one of the two open fires.
Always good friendly service and a great pint of Guinness. (The Fullers is no better than anywhere else, but no worse either.)
Johnno - 4 Jun 2004 16:09
Tommy Cooper used to drink here, but he doesn't any longer.
hector - 21 May 2004 17:55
Good local pub with Thai food, run by the former manager of Latymer's on Hammersmith Road. Full range of Fuller's beers.
beeronaut - 10 Mar 2004 08:31
This is my favourite Chiswick pub - a good mix of people, friendly staff and a good pint. I've heard good things about the Thai restaurant but haven't sampled it.
Sally - 9 Feb 2004 12:40
Decent traditional local.
Irish landlord with a Thai wife - good combination.
Simon Q - 20 Jan 2004 17:46
Decent traditional boozer. How can people slag this off and then call the Packhorse and Talbot up the road a quality boozer? Unless, of course, they're confusing the two?
Good for: pints 5 > 6 of a piss up.
thenationofjames - 2 Dec 2003 13:52
This pub is a great Thai resaurant. As far as pubs go it is pretty poor, but is a good compromise if you have to go to a restaurant but would rather go to a pub.
Brad Dawson - 21 Aug 2003 16:30
This Pub Sucks Ass! Wouldn't be so bad but for all the developers that seem to frequent the place, talk about dull. I prefer Tommy's over the road as the doing the place up so you can go and watch the paint dry.
Anon - 8 Aug 2003 10:13
Busy...but boring as stodge and filled up with old geezers....try the Barley Mo (practically opposite) for some fine gals !
anon1 - 7 Aug 2003 17:51
Good Thai food with quick, friendly service and very low staff turnover.
anonymous - 9 Jul 2003 17:32
Great Pub and the busiest in the area, ie beats the Pack horse and Talbot and every other Pub on the High Street, The same manage there for the last eight years thus no all the riff raff have being long put out. No pool Table. 2 min walk for Chiswick park Station and it also has a great Thai Resturant. Pub size is very big, with spotless toliets.
