user reviews of King Harold, Harold Wood

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Faulty electrical fittings, at this pub, caused the death of a child - not long ago.

The legal case is ongoing - against the irresponsible/greedy/culpable owners.

Don't take any notice of the curmudgeons who 'dis' this pub. I remember the place when it was a REAL dive. Now it has been spruced up and has a modern, friendly atmosphere. My wife and I took an old friend in a wheelchair and the staff could not have been more accommodating. Disabled access was superb. We ate a very pleasant, reasonably priced Sunday lunch followed by tasty puddings. Okay, so they only have two real ales on, but they are well kept and the price is average for the area. I would go there again.
HornchurchJohn - 9 Oct 2016 18:19
Horrible place with very miserable staff - especially the girl with brown hair and 3 kilos of makeup. Smile girl! that's your job. Don't scare off customers with your miserable face.
Won't go there again.

Here on Saturday last and there is no doubt this is a very smart pub.
However there is a big sign outside that says:-
"A Fantastic Range of Cask Ale always available at the King Harold"
That is NOT what you get inside as they only have TWO hand pulls.
On this occasion one was blank and the other had Golden Hen which was ok and cost £3.30 a pint.
Time to remove that misleading sign I think!!!!!!
bjbrummiejohn - 31 May 2016 08:33
Loved the reviews on here :-)

After completing another stage of the London Loop, I was delighted to find a clean, modern pub with a roaring fire to dry off in front of.

Packed solid for a Saturday Afternoon.

Two beers on - Speckled Hen and Doom Bar. Both were in average condition.

I had a fantastic Christmas meal with my colleagues here, the staff paid us lots of attention and the food was gorgeous. Everybody had a great time and we stayed for a few extra drinks as well. Loved it so much we have decided to book our next staff party at the here! - from the bakery ladies. (local business)

Great local, lots of friendly people and great food and beer. I bring my family in for Sunday lunch and the service is always excellent. Its got a great outside bar and they have a good beer festival in the summer. Brilliant pub.
micky45 - 19 Nov 2014 20:49
A Few good quality ales sold here, I have made the King Harold my new local and it's close to Harold Wood train station so I go in on my way home from work. The staff are very friendly and the pub has great modern decor and leather sofas. There is also a fantstic beer garden at the back with it's own outside bar and bbq which the wife and I have been enjoying at the weekends.
hillbilly1 - 15 Jun 2013 19:07
Went to the King Harold Pub last Saturday night for my mates 30th birthday. We had our own private area with glass doors to separate our party from the main part of the pub. The service was fantastic, very friendly staff and a good choice of beers and real ales. The buffet was fantastic, sea food, indian food, sandwhiches, and homemade scotch eggs and lots more besides. We all had a fantastic evening and the staff looked after us really well.

I used to go to the King Harold every day for years until I moved away from the area 7 years ago. I've recently moved back to Harold Wood and thought I would go in for a quick pint. I was really surprised to see how much it has changed, it has been refurbished to a really high standard and had some great real ales on the bar which were poured directly from the barrel. The staff were really welcoming and chatty, apparently they have an outside bar which I will be trying out this summer! I'll definately go back.
Phil_h62 - 7 Feb 2013 12:50
I think the pub is a great pub, just a great shame about who owns it. The staff are treated like shit and they have just lost another great guy who was running it till a week ago. He is a hard worker and I hope this person realises what a prat he is for loosing him.

May i suggest to Whu that he and any others who have been having a gripe on here follow my lead. Stop griping and stop going to this hell hole. Dave will never change no matter how much u moan! There are plenty of better (and cheaper) boozers around. Eventually when it's just one man and his dog sat in the bar Dave might actually take notice or even better sell up and piss off. I stopped going to this dive and refuse to go back untill the looneys have left the asylum!

Went to the Harold to watch the West Ham v Liverpool game. Twelve of us
arrived and purchased our first of many pints, Dave the owner wont pay for
Sky so he downloads from the internet. The picture froze up and the drug
taking boys arrived. Off we went to the Archers and even though we go
stuffed, we had a good night out. This pub is for all to avoid at all costs as
the owner is a nuter

Have You Heard

`it is Sunday evening, I am pissed off, then my wife says go to the Harold for a pint.
Off I go dreaming of that ice cold lager, into the pup and up to the bar. I wait, I wait,
wait, wait, wait, then up come the bar man who has the personality of a brick, no
greeting, no smile, just looks at you. Pint of stella please, only got bottled beer mate,
what no beer on tap, no, leave it and go.

That is it, you have managed to finish this pup forever
westhamunited - 23 Mar 2009 10:33
So another one bites the dust! Not only have i lost count of the managers that Dave has been through since his reign of terror began, he has also fired every decent member of bar staff he ever had! It's all very well spending money on well needed refurb's but if there's nobody decent behind the bar it's worthless! Who does he think he is, Alan Sugar? Don't make me laugh!
Smiler99 - 3 Feb 2009 23:17
whus spot on right! Dave is losing one hell of a talented manager!
cuddy2977 - 29 Jan 2009 16:26
Have You Heard!!!!!!!!!

We don't need some shit entertainment for us to drink in this pub.

Match the big boys on price and the Harold will be full.

You need to get a grip Dave as you will lose loads.

Martin is leaving and I am gutted. He and his family are the best ever.

I urge you Dave to reconsider, and pull out all the stops to keep him,
lower the prices and watch your pub grow.

Ever watch the film One flew over the cuckoo's nest it has some wierd customers including one guy called Garfield whose real name is Kevin.

I'll certainly keep an eye out for this place.

Does anybody know what happened to Joe (the perv's) mate Neil? (The bald one who live upstairs and rides a bike?) He came in the other day looking like he'd been given a good kickin. I don't suppose Joe did it during some strange bondage game upstairs in their flat did he?

I really cant understand the meaning of these posts, I have drank in the King Harold for the past 25 years, well apart from the past three when I noticed the pub really go down hill.
The last poster seems to have the harold wood intelligence I see and seems to think that everyone is having a joke, they arent, I can assure you.
The place now is a joke with the Druggies back in there, the W**Kers snorting their lines, looking around with paranoid eyes. Since the old long standing guvnor left the shit has returned, ok fair enough the old family were a strange lot, very strange, but he did keep the crap out of the pub.
Its a village at the end of the day, and what does villages attract - idiots.
Go back ten years ago and it was a good pub, but then the little boys have grown up- got banned from any decent pub and congregate here.
Just avoid at all costs - "boys and girls", that sums it all up.
These little boys and girls must have been watching adult violence films, they actually ventured out of their comfort zone and the harold and were last seen, fighting in southend, thought that had gone out in the sixties, standing on the corner shouting out "romford, romford, king harold", so sad, so very very sad.

The king Harold cant take a joke!

As you drink in the pub, you know who writes this.

We are not slagging off the pub, just having fun.

Get back to the piss taking.

Thats it for this week Boys & Girls

westhamunited - 16 May 2008 15:56
Girls, Girls, Girls, rather than ranting on about how good or bad things are, take a f==king reality check.

Whilst kingmax may have preferred the sh*t hole he used to drink in, prior to someone spending more than 50p on a lick of paint, most I am sure would agree that a bit of private money (boasted about or otherwise) has actually done the Pub a favour.

I appreciate there are some who contribute to this site who spend the last friday of each month dividing their doll cheque into the number of cans of cider they can buy, but those who actually went to school perhaps understand the real cost of keeping this 'columbian back garden' in business. For a second I dont suppose our pond life friend has considered rising rent, rates, taxes, electrictity, gas costs and alcohol duties! Or the fact that he sits on a seat rather than a milk crate and gets all of his change back!

For those who want to drink in a pleasant astmosphere, at a fair price, the door is always open.

For those who have got nothing better to do than hide behind a computer and have a gripe everytime the money runs out, either a) make yourself known, your comments will be duly noted or b)buy your own pub and put your money where your mouth is!

DBearmanJnr2008 - 6 May 2008 19:36
Visited Harold Wood last week so I popped into the Harold for a couple and it was perfectly decent. It's probably five years since I last had a pint there and the intervening years have been very kind. That's not to say it's anything more than average but in comparison to the toilet it was it's a million times better. I was so glad to see the vile turds who used to congregate around the lounge bar have been flushed away, let's hope they're gone for good.
grilledsardines - 21 Apr 2008 23:20
used to be top pub untill new owner took over! Its now full of drunks and druggies creating a bad atmosphere for all. Music is too loud and drinks are too dear they go up almost every day. Landlord wonders why people are staying away its because he took there local pub and destroyed it !!! Best thing to do would be to sell up and let someone else sort your mess out!!!

I've not left a rating as I've not drunk here for years. That said I grew up in Harold Wood and according to folk I know the change of management and the refurb have made arguably the worst pub in the country into a mildly inviting prospect. What a great shame that there seems to be one sad case with an axe to grind and little better to do than create BITE logins and exhibit his inadequacy in public. Next time I'm seeing the folks I shall definitely pop in for a few to judge for myself crossing my fingers that the git in question has dragged himself off to one of Havering's many dreadful pubs where he'll clearly feel at home.

westhamunited - 20 Mar 2008 16:53
Great place to take your girlfriend for a quiet drink after work, Music so loud you can't even hear what your saying too each other, don't get me wrong everyone likes a bit of music when they go to a pub but so early in the afternoon, just because the manager is always wasted and just turns up the volume playing the same songs most nites can be quite annoying to most i'm sure alot of others feel the same.
Glad to see that the manager sets a good example for drink driving being a publican and all, he frequently drives home barely being able to standup, quite a worry that he may seriously hurt somebody.
It's shame really as I did used to find this pub a friendly place to have a drink and laugh with your mates, as for any coments about being annoymous why not won't be long to find somewhere better to drink,
P:s West Ham sucks
footie - 15 Mar 2008 13:41
Mmmm.....I notice when I click on the previous 4 usernames, they all joined this site in the last 4 weeks and have only reviewed this pub ! Some just big it up, others are simply plain rude. Do I detect a touch of childish behaviour here because sure as hell, recent reviews are poor by any standards. No rating left as I've not been around that patch for several years when I worked there.

CHRISTMAS EVE WAS BUSY, ITS GOING TO BE ITS CHRISTMAS. I THINK THE NEW OWNER HAS DONE A FANTASTIC JOB ON THIS PUB,AND CONTINUES TO, THE PEOPLE THAT GO IN THERE NOW ARE SO MUCH NICER, ITS A NICER PLACE TO DRINK, SIT, & EAT. BEFORE HE TOOK OVER THE PUB WAS A CARZY-A HEALTH RISK. OBVIOUSLY THE SAD PEOPLE OF THE WORLD WHO ARE ON THIS SITE SLATING THIS PUB, ASWELL AS SLAGGING OFF THE MANAGERS AND STAFF DONT LIKE CHANGE & WOULD RATHER SIT IN A SCUMMY PUB THAT YOU HAVE TO WIPE YOUR SHOES ON THE WAY OUT, RATHER THAN HOW IT IS NOW.PEOPLE WHO HAVE LEFT THESE REVIEWS REALLY DO NEED TO GET A LIFE, THE ONES THAT HAVE LEFT THESE REVIEWS YOU CAN GUARANTEE STILL GO IN THERE AND DRINK IN THERE THOUGH. THE ENTERTAINMENTS GOOD, THE FOODS GOOD, IT HAS A WARM FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE, THE OWNER IS TRYING HIS BEST TO IMPROVE THE PUB AND HE HAS COME ALONG WAY SINCE HE TOOK OVER.SO THE REST OF YOU GET A LIFE AND IM LOOKING FORWARD TO NEW YEARS EVE.
abc123456 - 30 Dec 2007 11:25
Christmas Eve and just over one year on since the new owner took over! Three poor overworked bar staff running around like lunatics, while customers queued for 30 minutes. In the meantime, the so called owner entertained us by dancing in the middle of the pub like a man in a one legged arse kicking competition. After the dancing show had finished he retired, exhausted, to behind the bar where you would have hoped he would lend a hand. This is where his next gem was produced. When the wrong drink was served and he was asked to replace it with the correct beverage his reply nothing to do with me and walked away. So much for taking on the responsibility of running good establishment! If you go there New Years Eve expect a similar experience YOUVE BEEN WARNED.
alucard - 26 Dec 2007 15:26
Yeah i agree this pub is PHAT !!!!!!! makes everyone feel good.
kingkey. - 7 Dec 2007 13:22
I visted the King Harold on Saturday night, with my family and what a great night we had. The singer 'Natasha' was fantastic (she even got paid!) The atmosphere was wonderful. My only compliant is with 'Peter and Selina' they should stay in the kitchen, where they can't be seen or heard and leave the banter, jest and serving of drinks to the real and oringnal bar staff. Thanks Martin, Richard, Angie, Jackie, Charlie and Kerry. Keep up the good work and send Peter and Selina to Coventry!!!
anonymous - 26 Nov 2007 16:05
The new owner should concentrate on getting a good manager.Sky TV not shifty greek TV.Some good bar staff , not dizzy birds who stand there talking while customers are waiting. The beer is good but seems to be going up in price quite regularly. At the end of the day it is a local boozer for drinking beer, socialising and watching sport. If you want to eat go to a restaurant or some gastro pub. PS do something about your drains man the pub smells like a sewer.
anonymous - 11 Nov 2007 17:28
all round a good pub but has some dodgey locals and too many pants chelsea supporters.
anonymous - 8 Nov 2007 16:11
Apprehensive at first, but once you start chatting to the staff and the regulars, a welcoming top pub to go drinking in. Beer well kept, great jukebox, and a fine packet of Smiths Bacon Fries, what more can you ask for. New things such as the quiz night (Da Da Da Da, Freddy Eastwood) are great, and the landlord is a great bloke. KH club may not exist, but this is a top boozer.
anonymous - 7 Nov 2007 16:00
I been to this pub on many occassions and have always found it a pleasant place to have a drink and the staff have always been friendly and welcoming. In respect of the warm beer I must remind everyone the beer comes from the same brewery as all the pubs in the area and mine has always been cold. Further more the food is delicous as they have two top chefs working there Albert being one of them.

Happy local resident.
abcd1 - 7 Nov 2007 14:37
It is so clear that the last two messages have been left by the last manager who was sacked!

I have been drinking in this pub for nearly 15 years and Its a quality boozer, the beer taste good and so dose the food, and its cheaper than a weatherspoons.
alot of money has been spent on this pub in the last twelve months and there is a very large decking area out the back and the inside has been refurbished.
Trade appears to be on the up as the last few weeks the pub has been very busy indeed. I attended the curry club last week and was very happy also my partner has been going to the new quiz night on a tuesday that also was very busy.

I would also like to thank the owner and staff for a fantastic fire works night on monday, the family and I loved it,great display, fantastic food ,brilliant night WELL DONE!

My last comment really has to be about the fact that the king harold has seen more managers in the last 12 months than I've had hot dinners. There has been some bad ones but the worst was that muppet who was there last.HE WOULD STRUGGLE TO RUN A BATH!!!!!!!! I think that most of these comments are from ex managers who have nothing better to do then pun down a whole heap of rubbish comments and then not have the balls to put there name to It.

THIS PUB IS BUSY EVERY SINGLE DAY,so they must be doing something right! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

jb1965 - 7 Nov 2007 12:52
i have been to many pubs in my day and have to say this is the worst pub i have ever been in. i agree with the last comment on here it is a total shambles and the owner is a joke. the previous manager was good at his job but the owner got rid of him and now there is a total idiot trying to run things who hasnt got a clue on what he is doing. THIS PUB IS NOT WORTH GOING TO EVER!!!!!
anonymous - 10 Oct 2007 16:04
ths has got to be without a shadow of doubt the worst pub i have ever been in. the owner has no clue on how to run a pub and he got rid of the only manager that knew how to run a decent pub. this pub is a disgrace!!
anonymous - 7 Oct 2007 13:45
I have to say that if you book an act you are not happy with, you do not wait until they finish their act before letting them down. You are very unprofessional & it has to be quetioned weather you are fit to run such an establishment that employes entertainment.
Dean is an excellent tribute to our king Elvis but that is beside the point he gave his time to entertain your cliental you should pay him if you have any missgivings they should be taken up with Deans agent at a later date.
How would you feel if i came into your establishment ordered several meals drinks etc & then said sorry i'm not happy with that so will not be paying yeah right.
Get real pay him what he is due.
A very discruntled Alan
ajpx - 24 Jun 2007 23:28
Having read with interest the last 2 reviews I feel i need to add my two penneth. I Work quite local to this "establishment" and as such use the Harold some lunchtimes. I stress that this is because of Geography only. The atmosphere is bland at best, not to mention smokey (role on July 1st!). The food is totally non-descript and the quality of the beer is poor. Add to this the obvious lack of moral fibre shown by the owners in the previous reports and i would be surprised if this pub is winning many new customers. The decor is straight out of the Ark and the toilets are shocking.
The best part of the pub are the few rickety benches stuck outside on the footpath where at least your only poisened by the passing traffic and trains instead of the chain smoking "locals".
Out of ten - I'd award 2 points. In truth a better bet is to hop in the car and go to the Bull at Brentwood.
whufaninsawbo - 24 Jun 2007 19:56
this publican is a disgrace and this is a warning to any entertainer.a young elvis tribut turned up last night to perfom in this pub,the lad done his show to the best standard possible and kept the paying punters in the pub and entertained them as was reqired, after being congratulated by some of the locals he then went to be paidonly for sam the resident landlady and local simon cowell to state that this guy wasnt her cup of tea and refused to pay his fee,i will personally post this on every entertainment foum i can find unless the lad recieves payment for his work,if you are reading this sa i hope you are ashamed of yourself and you dont deserve hard working acts in your pub and ithink you will regret this shocking behaviour as word will spread and no one will touch your pub again, what goes around comes around.i live in scotland and i know of this so how many closer to homee have also heard, the technilogical age is great dont you think
johnnyb1960 - 24 Jun 2007 19:14
On the 23 June 2007,a Elvis singer turned up at this pub & so did a band, they left as it was a double booking, Elvis performed all night, & not once through the night did the landlady come up & say that he was not her cup of tea, he did his 1 half/2 hours the crowd liked him, but at the end of the night, the landlady refused to pay because, now let me put it like this SHE PERSONALLY DID NOT LIKE HIM, crap he deserved his money, he did the gig, i am sorry but i have been in this buisiness along time, & i would not have left without the full payment, he should have stood his ground & told her that he was not leaving without his money, she has taken the p**s, she has let him do his job all night & at the end f****d him off with a lame excuse, why didn't she pay him off after the 1st 10 or 15 mins, i hate people like that, she took money behind the bar, he kept the punters in & they spent money & they had a good night, i am in equity & there is know way on gods earth that i personally would not leave any premises without any well earned money, Elvis did his job, & he should be paid in full, i am sorry i am going on, but this just makes me mad, & i will do everything in my power for a boycot of all entertainers in this place, nobody should be treated in this way.

A freindly pub. Recently installed 3 flat screen TV's and also has a large projector screen

Live football all the time

efficient bar staff

juke box with over 2 million tracks

seems like an ideal place to me

Definately a locals pub. Not being a local - when I visited I wasnt made to feel welcome by the crowd which was mostly made up of older people.
Bit dingy to.

remember the scene in american werewolf in london when the two yanks wander into the slaughtered lamb and get that great welcome well relive the scene and visit the king harold where the beer is warm and the welcome is cold.........never ever again!
