Popular pub, friendly barmaid, I had Moorehouse's 'Broomstick Bitter' [decent ale], Phoenix 'Shamrock' [not bad & smooth], and Saltaire 'Citra' [zesty refreshing ale].

Fairly busy on our midweek visit, indulged in Robinson's '[Iron Maiden] Trooper', a well kept ale.

Staff still efficient, quite busy on our recent visit, beers partaken of were Acorn Brewery 'oatmeal Stout' [nice pint] & Hanlon's 'Port Stout' [smooth and tasty].

Not a bad pub, staff knew who was next to be served [a plus], does not have a smoking area but beer can be taken to outside tables on the street. I indulged in one of the festival ales 'Afro-Carribean Hop Session' which was tasty.

Saturday afternoon and a Wetherspoons that is nowhere near busy. Therein begins the knowledge that something is wrong with this pub. Tables uncleaned and empty glasses stacked in odd corners. Strange. Ordered an Erdinger, a rioja and a couple of packets of crisps. Was told would have to have a glass for my beer (why wouldn't I for a wheat beer) but then, as the lad poured a pint of head into the plastic beaker losing some of my beer, I said not to worry as I'd sort it - but was told no, he could not let me have the bottle so I had to wait while he tried to sort it. Then, he tried to charge me £12 for 2 drinks and 2 bags if crisps. I commented that this seemed a little steep, something he clearly hadn't noticed. After checking his till he advised that he had charged me for an extra drink, a pint of Stella!!

As I said, the untidy nature of the day resulted in us selecting a table which had been bathed in ale, but the previous visitors had used 2 menus as place-mats... We found a member of staff to clean the table, only to hear other tables shout over that they too were in need of a clean. Poor lass was suddenly v busy!!

Beer and wine out of plastic is hard work. Vessels never look or feel clean and my pint glass had an edge that felt like it had been chewed.

All I can say is that there have obviously been problems either in the pub specifically or the town in general and the way they have decided to deal with it is to make sure anyone who wants a quiet and pleasant, civilised drink will go somewhere else, so they can just deal with numpties. Will. Not. Go. Back.

Pretty standard town centre Wetherspoons which was very busy on a Saturday morning, with a mixed crowd of football fans and shoppers. Being one of very few establishments open before 11am, nearly every table was occupied. Plastic glasses were being used. Although I'm not sure why when all other pubs we visited later were using glass. Beers on were Moorhouses Ruby Witch, Hook Norton Double Stout, Courage Directors, Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Thwaites Wainwright, George Wright Hallertau & Beartown Ginger Bear. There were also two real ciders from Westons - Old Rosie and Traditional Scrumpy. Nothing to write home about as a pub. But Wetherspoons always have their advantages in their opening hours, price and drinks range.

The most depressing Spoons that I have yet to encounter. 10 am Saturday morning, and already full of keg heads and football yobbos. Food is nothing special. Needs to up it's game.

One of the dullest Spoons i've ever been in, yet it was heaving gone high noon, as i struggled to find a seat.

Drank a pint of IPA from some Yankee microbrewery, costing 1.99 and just about drinkable. I left shortly afterwards, would i return, probably not.

It's a Spoons, so what you see you very often get, they rarely excel, but they're pretty consistent, good reasonably priced food and usually the cheapest beers in town & the Moon Under The Water is no exception.

This is a large pub, with the front area reserved mainly for food and the side bar being more for standing & gambling (lots of bandits). The main lounge seating / alcoves are at the back. The general dcor is a few years old now and beginning to look pretty tatty in places. I feel a make over is well over due, as the carpets in the main bar look particular grubby.

I have been here a number of times and contrary to earlier reports I read, the beer choice has often been quite good, however, I have to agree & concede that both the choice & quality can vary in consistency & it's something they really need to work on. As with most "Spoons" these days locally sourced ales (although not exclusive) do tend to dominate . On my visits, George Wright, Allgates, Coach House, Moorhouses & Phoenix in particular are regulars.

Be warned though, at peak times this is a busy pub and on more than one occasion I've walked in only to walk straight out again. The staff work hard here, but all too often there's never enough on duty to cope with demand.
One other piece of advice too, unless you like plastic cups, bouncers on the door, rowdy behaviour and an age to get served....avoid this place on match day afternoons!

On my visits the clientle is typically "Spoons" a good all round mix, with no one gender or age dominating. However, they all seem to attract those amongst us who don't know when they've had enough. It's not unique to "Spoons" of course, but they do seem to attract more than their fair share. Luckily, when you have money & a choice, the door is always open.

The upstairs toilets are relatively small for the size of the place and whilst some vandalism was evident, It was nice to see they were clean.

To summarise, this is a typically average "Spoons", but if you're passing it might just be worth a quick look. OK, inconsistency seems to be it's major failing, but you never know, you might just hit lucky. On a good day it's well worth a sample.

Very dissapointing ale considering that it is a spoons. The overall attitude of the barstaff leaves alot to be desired. Having ordered the infamous curry club on one thursday afternoon I decided never to go there ever again. The naan bread was like cardboard and the ale was flat after two sips.

AVOID!!!

Poor drinking experience. The bar us a long affair set in what amounts to a corridor with half a dozen gambling machines to your back. The staff are very young, very slow and not above loudly bemoaning their lot while taking your money. Really not worth a visit.

Usual Wetherspoons fare in a pub handy for the stations. Service was slow with only 2 staff serving a packed pub. But they did a good job serving people in order. Real ales available were B & T Sod, Woods Special, Orkney Red McGregor, Moorhouses Premier Bitter, George Wright Longboat and Drunken Duck, Greene King Abbot Ale, Courage Directors and Ruddles Best. Westons Marcle Hill cider was also available from the fridge.

Have visited a few times & agree with recent comments. You know what you're getting which is decent compared to nearby establishments.

Friendly Spoons.. good selection of beers but getting through the obnoxious smokers crowding the doorways can be a pain.
Downstairs has too many bandits with the usual "professionals" with bags of coins.. Food is good though I agree with the other comments that as it's very busy service can be slow. Seems to have a lot of passing trade changing trains who have been frightened out of every other pub on the way up the hill.

The main drinking area is a bit soulless, though it's nice to sit upstairs by the Wiend entrance. Dependable beer and of course, there's always something to eat. Bar service can be slow, but only because the place is usually so busy.

Busy pub with good range of guest ales. Usually has Cain's Dark Mild at 1.39 a pint. Service is very efficient.

Recently refurbished, this place, although a bit rough is very handy after a hard days shopping and also handy for train station. good food, cheap drink, good service even when busy, sometimes tricky to get a seat tho as its so busy!
